Northwestern Oklahoma State University is one of six regional universities governed by the Regional University System of Oklahoma, formerly the Board of Regents of Oklahoma Colleges.
The Regional University System of Oklahoma is the largest four-year university system in the state. System institutions graduate nearly 40 percent of all Oklahoma graduates.
The Board of Regents is comprised of eight citizens appointed by the governor of Oklahoma, along with the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
