Local Day of Kindness in Northwest Oklahoma Group to Meet Sept. 10

September 5, 2024

A local meeting to discuss activities planned for November’s annual Day of Kindness in Northwest Oklahoma is set for Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 3:30 p.m. in the conference room on the second floor of Ryerson Hall (room 229) at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva.

This is the fourth year Northwestern personnel have welcomed the campus communities in Alva, Enid and Woodward, along with all others in northwest Oklahoma to participate in this worldwide event. Activities in northwest Oklahoma will take place on Nov. 15.

Representatives from campus as well as Alva and the area are welcome to attend this meeting and discuss projects their organizations and businesses might do for this upcoming event.

This local organizing sub-committee reports to the overall group, United Way of Northwest Oklahoma in Enid, to discuss the possible random acts of kindness that could happen during the week or on the Day of Kindness in Northwest Oklahoma date.

World Kindness Day is observed each year on Nov. 13, but the local organizers selected Nov. 15 this year as the day to celebrate in northwest Oklahoma.

This special day was introduced in 1998 to promote kindness throughout the world. It is observed in many other countries including Australia, Canada, India, Italy, Japan, Nigeria, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.

The United Way of Northwest Oklahoma has been observing this day to promote random acts of kindness in the area since 2015 and brought Northwestern in four years ago.

“We had a great representation of Northwestern clubs, organizations and individuals last year in providing a full day of kindness activities across our campus locations in Alva, Enid and Woodward,” Valarie Case, local organizer and assistant director of university relations at Northwestern, said. “Not only did random acts of kindness occur on our campuses, but many activities took place within our various communities thanks to our students, employees and community members.

“We have started making our list of Day of Kindness activities to share with the United Way of Northwest Oklahoma, so as soon as you know what you’ll be doing, let me know.”

The United Way of Northwest Oklahoma is seeking monetary sponsors to help purchase many of the needed items non-profits indicate that they may need. Anyone who would like to be a sponsor may earmark their funds to be used to purchase items for Alva or wherever they would like them to be used.

Additional information about the local efforts for the Day of Kindness in Northwest Oklahoma can be found on the organization’s Facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/bekindnwok.

Case may be contacted at vcase@nwosu.edu. If interested in attending via Zoom, please let Case know so a link can be established. Also, please let Case know if planning to attend in person.
