Calling all incoming freshmen at Northwestern Oklahoma State University – Camp Ranger is set for Aug. 1 – 3 at the Alva campus. The deadline to register is July 31 at www.nwosu.edu/camp-ranger.

Calleb Mosburg, dean of student affairs and enrollment management, explained this Northwestern event is organized and run by the Northwestern Scholar Ambassadors, a group of campus leaders who are selected to represent Northwestern in and out of the classroom.

"I was a camper two years ago and loved it so much,” said McKenzie Mashak, junior Elementary Education major from Cimarron, Kansas, and Northwestern Scholar Ambassdor. “I enjoyed being able to learn about the town of Alva and meet so many new friends before school even started.”

By attending, incoming freshmen will have the opportunity to meet their classmates, get to know senior staff members, become familiar with the Alva community and its leaders, learn Ranger traditions and officially join the Ranger family with the creation of their own student ID.

"We are looking forward to welcoming the freshmen attending Camp Ranger in August,” said Edna Garcia, Camp Ranger director, Northwestern Scholar Ambassdor and junior psychology major from Beaver. “All the counselors are eager to meet the incoming freshmen and develop new friendships as we prepare for the fall semester.”

The cost is $115 for the three days of activities, meals, housing and an exclusive T-shirt only received by students attending this event. Registration may be made via check by mailing to the Northwestern Business Office at 709 Oklahoma Blvd., Alva, OK 73717 or paid upon arrival during check-in by cash or check. Checks should be payable to NWOSU.

“We have implemented exciting new activities like touring the Alabaster Caverns,” Garcia said. “We also have opportunities for students to familiarize themselves with the campus and the staff. We cannot wait to meet each individual that registers and show them what it means to be a part of the Ranger Family."

In addition to the hike through Alabaster Caverns State Park, other activities planned include a campus-wide scavenger hunt and a movie at the downtown Rialto Cinema.

“Last year, I helped as a counselor, and it was so fun,” Mashak said. “I loved being able to meet incoming freshmen, and as a Peer Leader I got to meet so many of my students that were in my Ranger Connection class. Camp Ranger is always such a fun time!”

Check-in is Aug. 1 from noon to 5 p.m. at Cunningham Hall, where students will move into the residence halls they will be living in for the semester. At 5 p.m., the students will meet in the lobby of their respective dorms for a welcome and icebreakers before dinner and other fun activities. Check-out time is Aug. 3 at 1 p.m.
