Mass Communication Students Learn from Industry Professionals at Conference

October 16, 2024

Northwestern mass communication students learned lessons from industry professionals during the recent OETA/OBEA Student Day in Oklahoma City. Those attending include Dr. Jesse Schroeder, Tara Owen, Karoline Juresiute and Piper Gallagher.

Three Northwestern Oklahoma State University mass communication majors traveled to Oklahoma City for the annual OETA/OBEA Student Day on Oct. 9.

The students - Karolina Juresiute, Vilnius, Lithuania, senior; Tara Owen, Alva senior; and Piper Gallagher, Watonga sophomore – participated in four sessions.

In the first session titled Inside the Interview, students learned how to conduct meaningful interviews. The panelists discussed techniques they used to obtain good information during interviews and shared some of their award-winning moments and times when the interviews did not go as planned.

The second session was on Mental Health. The panelists discussed how they feel mental health is something that is often ignored in the broadcast media profession and shared ways they deal with the stresses of the job, and how they keep their mental health in check.

Session three was Salary Negotiations and Contracts. This session focused on the business side of the broadcasting industry. Panelists shared how to negotiate contracts and get the salary you desire.

The last session was titled Uncovering Election Coverage. During this session, panelists shared ways they cover politics during a time when the country is divided on the topic. The panelists shared how they focus on fair coverage and uncovering information the consumers of news need to know about.

"Every year, the Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association offers this conference to our students,” said Dr. Jesse Schroeder, assistant professor of mass communication. “It’s a great way for our students to learn from the professionals currently working in the field and to also network with others in the industry.”
