Northwestern announces 2018 homecoming theme, parade marshal
August 16, 2018
Winner of the Miss Cinderella 2017 pageant, Lexi Vanderwork of Woodward waves to the crowd during Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Homecoming Parade, last year.
Events have been set for Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s annual homecoming celebration Oct. 4-6, and the organizing committee looks forward to seeing many familiar, and some new, faces in Alva.
The Northwestern Foundation and Alumni Association helped Northwestern’s homecoming committee narrow down a theme that reflected genuine Ranger pride for current students, faculty, employees and alumni. This year’s theme – “Get Rowdy! Homecoming 2018” – emphasizes Northwestern’s belief that tradition plays an important role in homecoming.
“Rowdy has been part of the Northwestern family for decades and a symbol of Ranger pride,” Dr. David Pecha, general chairman, said. “The homecoming committee hopes this year’s theme will provide an opportunity for engagement and involvement by the student body as well as the local community. As alumni return home, they will be greeted by a familiar symbol of Northwestern tradition.”
Student and community groups are encouraged to create floats that incorporate this theme for Homecoming.
Leading the parade on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 10 a.m. in downtown Alva will be the parade marshal Dr. David Bohlen, a former Northwestern student and faculty member. Bohlen taught chemistry at Northwestern, 1973-2000, and was Dean of the School of Natural Science, Mathematics and Computer Science from 1979-2000. He retired in 2000 and has remained an enthusiastic Ranger fan. He enjoys keeping up to date with Ranger students by serving college dinner Wednesday evenings at the First Christian Church and attending numerous university events.
Homecoming button sales and this year’s design will be announced at a later date.
