The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Department of Social Work is thrilled to announce an innovative new practicum partnership with the Bill Johnson Correctional Center (BJCC) in Alva.
This new paid partnership is designed to provide social work students with hands-on experience in a correctional setting, offering a unique opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a practical environment.
This collaboration aims to enhance the educational experience of social work students while making a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals within the correctional system, bridging the gap between academic theory and real-world practice.
BJCC will serve as an ideal setting for students to engage with diverse and complex cases. The practicum will allow students to work closely with correctional staff and inmates, gaining insights into the challenges and opportunities within the criminal justice system.
“The Social Work Field Education Program and Northwestern Community Service Provider at BJCC are essential partners, combining systemic understanding with individualized care,” said Trent Spade, treatment director at BJCC. “Their collaboration ensures comprehensive support, boosts mental health, and fortifies community resilience by addressing both widespread and personal challenges.”
Jenna Maier, a junior social work major from Alva and current practicum student, said, "The partnership between the Northwestern Department of Social Work and BJCC has provided me with a unique practicum opportunity. The experience I’m gaining from my work and colleagues is setting me apart from my peers.”
Maier added that she has already seen the difference this program makes in the lives of inmates.
“I was nervous at first to work in a prison,” Maier said, “but, the substance abuse treatment program at BJCC is set up to highlight the strengths of the inmates while teaching them skills to maintain a sober lifestyle once they get out.”
Dr. Kylene Rehder, chair of the Northwestern Department of Social Work and professor of social work, said this new practicum partnership represents a milestone achievement and underscores the department's commitment to preparing students for the challenges and rewards of social work practice in all its forms.
"We are incredibly excited about this new collaboration with the BJCC,” Rehder said. “The Northwestern Department of Social Work continues to expand its efforts to provide students with diverse and impactful learning opportunities. This partnership represents a significant leap in our efforts to provide students with comprehensive, real-world experience. Working in a correctional setting will challenge our students to think critically, adapt quickly, and develop innovative solutions to complex issues.”
