Northwestern Oklahoma State University welcomed the Oklahoma Association of Student Councils (OASC) members back to campus for their second BASIC leadership workshop July 14-19. This is the 15th summer Northwestern has played host to the group.
Two hundred twenty two high school students from across Oklahoma attended this camp, where students engage in major skill development sessions.
Students attending for the week include high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. During the workshop, students are divided into 12 councils where they must come up with a school name, mascot, colors and a school song and chant. Students in each council also are given real-life problems to solve and then act out their resolutions using skits. They also participate in breakout sessions, including leadership styles, team building, etiquette, school spirit and activities.
Junior Counselors, members of OASC who have graduated high school, were assigned to each of the 12 councils. Those students included Bailey Boyd, Kenna Cobberly, Drew Clovis, Ava Dorris, Hayden Duncan, Lennox Fulks, Brynn Grove, Harper Houston, Ruby Kibuka, Elayna Lopez, Emma Mattke, Chandler Patterson, Lexi Poyner, Eli Putnam and Lorin Scott.
Students are used various buildings around campus and stayed in university housing along with the directors: Karen Koehn of Northwest Technology Center in Alva, workshop director for junior counselors and state officers; Denise Tomlinson of Bixby High School, director of facilities; Melinda Parks of Westmoore High School, director of curriculum and adult staff; and Shawn Freeman of Ada High School, director of registration.
Koehn thanked and praised the community and university for their hospitality during the events.
"OASC BASIC had another impactful and engaging week of July BASIC on the Northwestern campus,” Koehn said. “The community of Alva and Northwestern are the absolute best hosts to our organizations and the delegates and staff attending BASIC continued to share their appreciation and love for our community!”
