Over 100 Students to be at Northwestern for Regional Esports Competition Oct. 27
October 25, 2022
Northwestern Oklahoma State University esports will play host to the Oklahoma Scholastic Esports (OKSE) regional qualifier for Super Smash Brother Ultimate on Thursday, Oct. 27, where over 102 middle and high students will be on the Alva campus.
These students from across Oklahoma will compete at 10 a.m. in the Esports Arena on the first floor of Shockley Hall. The event is open for the public to view free of charge.
Players will use Nintendo Switches to play and earn points that go towards their year-long total to determine who gets to participate in the state championships held in the spring.
Schools currently attending include Aline-Cleo, Arapaho-Butler, Blackwell, Canute, Clinton, Deer Creek-Lamont, Freedom, Guymon, Hammon, Laverne, Taloga, Texhoma and Watonga.
Evan Vaverka, director of esports and instructor of computer science, said universities across the United States offer scholarships to compete in this video game, including Northwestern.
“When we built the esports arena, we wanted to be able to host both high and middle schools in events here,” Vaverka said. “We are excited to be hosting this event for OKSE. There will be many top players from around the state coming to play Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. We hope to build bridges with these students and interest them in coming here as undergraduate students to play for us as well.”
