October 16, 2024

Tara OwenA Northwestern Oklahoma State University mass communication major recently received one of four $1,500 scholarships from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters (OAB).

Tara Owen, Alva senior, accepted the award Oct. 9 at the annual Student Day Conference held in Oklahoma City at the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority (OETA) studio. The conference was co-sponsored by the Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association (OBEA).

OAB President Vance Harrison and OETA Executive Director Polly Anderson presented the scholarship awards. These scholarships honor William “Bill” Thrash and Gene Dillehay, longtime broadcasters in Oklahoma and served OETA for many years.

The scholarships are intended for communication students with a strong interest in broadcast. Owen plans to pursue a career in television news upon graduating this spring.

While at Northwestern, Owen has had several opportunities to gain practical experience in the news media industry. She serves as an anchor/reporter for NWTV, the campus television station, writes stories for the Northwestern News, the campus newspaper, and provides content for the program’s online platform, RangerPulse.com.

“Owen has shown leadership qualities by taking on editorial roles and serving as a leader within various roles in the mass communication program at Northwestern,” said Dr. Jesse Schroeder, assistant professor of mass communication and broadcast media adviser at the university.

Beyond her work in the mass communication program, Owen also serves as a Northwestern Scholar Ambassador (NSA). NSA students are a group of academically high achievers, who serve as ambassadors to the university by serving as tour guides, recruiters and hosts at events on campus.
